United v Real player ratings

United v Real player ratings

Robin van Persie

MANCHESTER UNITED

De Gea - 6

HAD a brilliant first leg in the Bernabeu and cannot be blamed for the two goals.

Was forced into one save in the first half when he smothered a Gonzalo Higuain effort. His best was to deny Ronaldo.

Da Silva - 6

DID not make as big an impact as in the first leg but he stuck to his task chasing down Ronaldo like a terrier.
And he crucially lost him at the far post for the second goal that condemned United to an exit.

Vidic - 8

MISSED out at the Bernabeu as Ferguson eased him back after a long injury.
But he was ready for last night as he proved at both ends of the pitch. Nearly scored a first-half goal when his header hit a post.

Ferdinand - 7

RESTED at the weekend, so he would be ready for this game.
Provided real authority at the back with Nemanja Vidic again and looked in control of proceedings until the sending-off turned the tide against the Red Devils.

Evra - 6

VERY solid in the first half like the rest of the back four but had a tough time after the break coping with Gonzalo Higuain when he went wide on the right.
Tried to push forward late on in the game.

Carrick - 8

ONE of United’s best players this season and was controlling things last night until the red card rocked his side.
His block when Ronaldo was primed to shoot in the first half was an example of his reading of the game.

Cleverley - 7

GOT the nod with Phil Jones injured and did not let his boss down.
His passing from the back was slick and helped United counter, while he used his speed to deny the Real players space.

Nani - 7

HE was a big surprise in the starting line-up after not even making the squad for the first leg in Madrid.
Forced the own goal from Ramos and was very unlucky to be sent off for a high boot in the second half.

Welbeck - 6

KEPT his place after his display in the Bernabeu.
Did his usual running and holding up but struggled to get his shots away when the chances came. Missed a sitter in the first half but was offside anyway.

Giggs - 6

FERGIE deliberately left him out at the weekend, so he could celebrate his 1,000th professional match against Real.
One pass with the outside of his left foot that set up Robin van Persie for a chance at the far post was superb.

Van Persie - 6

MISSED a big chance in the first leg and wasted another one here when found by Giggs.
Had a late effort saved. By his own high standards he is out of form at the moment with just one goal in his last eight appearances.

SUBS

WAYNE ROONEY (Cleverly 73): Fergie turned to the striker (left) as the game slipped away, but left it too late. 6
ASHLEY YOUNG (Welbeck 80): His pace was introduced late on to try and take advantage of the tiring Real defence. 6
ANTONIO VALENCIA (Rafael 87): Ecuadorian winger had no time to make an impact. 5 Not used: Hernandez, Evans, Young, Kagawa.
Booked: Evra, Carrick.

REAL MADRID

Diego Lopez - 6

BEATEN by a 21st-minute header from Nemanja Vidic but the post came to his rescue.
He made an unconvincing save from Robin van Persie but denied the United striker later with a good stop and also thwarted Vidic.

Arbeloa - 6

KEPT on his toes by the pace and trickery of Nani.
Booked in the 38th minute for a studs-up shocker on Patrice Evra.
Escaped a red but was replaced by match-winner Luka Modric.

Varane - 6

SUPERB recovery tackle to block Nani after the winger had flown past him.
Lost out to the United ace, though, on the touchline and the Portuguese star’s cross was turned into his own net by skipper Ramos.

Sergio Ramos - 6

EXPERT block to divert a Danny Welbeck shot behind for a corner and stayed strong in the box to out-muscle Rafael who went down seeking a penalty.
But he was unfortunate to score an own goal.

Fabio Coentrao - 6

TRIED his best to bomb down the left and link up with the attack but always had to be aware of the quick counters of Ryan Giggs and Danny Welbeck.
Won his share of tackles and worked hard.

Khedira - 7

A SUPERB lofted pass that put Ronaldo clear should have been an assist but he fluffed it.
He does an incredible amount of work in the middle — a lot of which goes unnoticed.

Alonso - 5

NOT his usual self, mis-hitting passes and looking frustrated.
Welbeck was dropping off and squeezing the space he normally enjoys and that stilted a lot of Madrid’s plays from deep. Never stopped working, though.

Di Maria - 5

HE is the high-energy action man in the Madrid team with lots of runs.
But he also made lots of mistakes and tumbles.
All that racing around took its toll as he picked up a hamstring injury.

Ozil - 7

SHOWED wonderful movement and awareness. He darted everywhere — left, right and through the middle — but always forwards.
Too often, though, his runs were in vain. Subbed with 20 minutes to go.

Ronaldo - 7

A GREAT reception from the home fans but a nervous start.
It was not a vintage performance — but he had the last word with a lunge at the far post to make it 2-1.
Finished with a flurry, seeing two efforts saved.

Higuain - 7

PICKED ahead of Benzema and had the ball in the net but it was chalked off for an earlier foul.
Thought he had equalised on the hour but his header was blocked by Rafael. Teed up Ronaldo for 2-1.

SUBS

PEPE (Ozil 71): Sent on to shore up the defence and see the game out. 4
KAKA (Di Maria 45): Barely noticed. His fall from grace is akin to Torres at Chelsea. 4
LUKA MODRIC (Arbeloa 59): DREAM TEAM STAR MAN. Croat was full of running and started to boss midfield. Hit 25-yard stunner.9 Not used: Adan, Benzema, Albiol, Callejon.
Booked: Arbeloa, Pepe, Kaka.
